STeP: A Summer Institute for High School Females

Science and Technology Preview (STeP) is a one week summer institute for high school females. This institute introduces young women to the career opportunities available in industrial technology, including process technology. The participants enjoy hands-on activities and lab experiments at their local community college.

Local industry representatives are included in the activities as speakers and mentors. The curriculum covers a wide range of process industries from oil exploration and production to pharmaceuticals. It also includes salary information with a quality of life activity that the students use to design what type of lifestyle they might want in ten years. The team building activities provide a way for the participants to interact and bond with each other as well as to provide much laughter!

The participants divide themselves into small groups toward the end of the week to design and create a class presentation on the process used to produce a product. These presentations take on a variety of formats and prove to be quite entertaining and informative.

The week wraps up with a field trip to a local industry site for the participants to view and tour a process industry! They are then treated to an awards luncheon that includes parents, friends and industry representatives that also serve as an audience for their presentations.
